The Buffalo Soldiers National Museum (BSNM) has officially commenced a significant renovation of its historic home, the Houston Light Guard Armory. As of July 4, 2025, the museum is temporarily closed to the public, with plans to reopen in Summer 2026. This marks an important milestone in the museum’s ongoing mission to preserve, interpret, and expand the narrative of African American military history.

Preservation in Progress
In preparation for this transformative period, the BSNM team has spent recent months carefully cataloging, packing, and securing its collection of artifacts. These efforts ensure that each item—many of which hold deep historical and cultural significance—is protected during the construction process.
Our staff even rolled up their sleeves and joined in the initial demolition efforts, underscoring the museum’s hands-on commitment to this process. The removal of legacy installations, including the welcome desk, marks the beginning of a thoughtful redesign that will introduce six newly constructed permanent galleries, offering expanded and inclusive narratives of African American military service.

Community Support and Strategic Partnerships
This ambitious renovation is supported in part by a generous $1.25 million gift from the Kinder Foundation. In addition, Harris County has provided critical backing for the museum’s Ready & Forward Capital Campaign. These investments will support infrastructure improvements, enhance accessibility, and enable the development of dynamic, historically accurate exhibitions.
Even in the midst of renovation, our Ready & Forward Capital Campaign continues. A generous national donor has stepped forward with a $250,000 Challenge Match—doubling every gift until the match is met. If you which to support the museum’s mission ad protect the legacy of the millions of Black men and women who served with honor, consider making a donation today.
Looking Ahead
This renovation represents more than a physical transformation; it reflects the museum’s commitment to telling a broader, more inclusive story of African American military service. As we prepare to reopen in 2026, we look forward to welcoming visitors back into a space that both honors the past and embraces the future.
