Recognizing the Legacy of 3-24 Infantry Regiment

The Department of the Army announced the results of its review of the cases of Soldiers from the 3rd Battalion, 24th Infantry Regiment, who were court-martialed in 1917 for their role in what became known as the Houston Riot or Camp Logan Mutiny. The announcement and ceremony, shown in the video below, was held on November 13, 2023 at the Buffalo Soldiers National Museum in Houston, Texas.

The decision resulted from a clemency petition filed on behalf of the soldiers. The U.S. Army issued a news release stating that the convictions were being set aside.

“After a thorough review, the Board has found that these Soldiers were wrongly treated because of their race and were not given fair trials,” said Secretary of the Army Christine Wormuth. “By setting aside their convictions and granting honorable discharges, the Army is acknowledging past mistakes and setting the record straight.”
