As we enter 2025, I want to express my deepest gratitude for your generous support, which has propelled the Buffalo Soldiers National Museum’s (BSNM) mission to honor the legacy of African-American military service.
Because of you, children discover new heroes, veterans are honored and supported, and our rich history continues to thrive. You have preserved African American history, inspired community resilience, and deepened understanding for everyone who walks through our doors.
Thanks to you, this year has been marked by incredible accomplishments:
- History came alive as we debuted The Blue Helmets in Action, a traveling exhibition focusing on the 93rd Infantry Division to be activated during World War II, and The Buffalo Division in Action, an exhibit highlighting the 92nd Infantry Division’s valor in World War II.
- Young minds were ignited with educational programs like NASA Day, which brought students to the museum to engage with hands-on science and technology activities while learning about the ingenuity of Buffalo Soldiers.
- Our future took shape with the Ready & Forward Capital Campaign, which set the stage for restoring our historic building, expanding collections, planning exciting new immersive exhibitions across all three floors, and ensuring our long-term sustainability.
- Community ties reached new heights with the Captain’s Legacy Golf Tournament, a unifying event that supported our vital work.
Looking forward, 2025 promises to be a landmark year:
- Centennial of Our Historic Home: We will celebrate 100 years of the Houston Light Guard Armory, the building we are proud to call home.
- Juneteenth @ 160 Festival and Exhibition: From June 19-21, this three-day celebration will include Terms and Conditions: The Promise vs. The Reality exhibition, and a living history festival, highlighting the role of the United States Colored Troops in Juneteenth. These events will connect historic and contemporary perspectives on liberation and resilience.
- The Ready & Forward Capital Campaign: With your help, we continue to work toward our $13 million goal to restore our historic building, enhance our collections, and ensure sustainability for the future of the museum.
Onward, I ask that you support our path forward in whatever capacity you are able, whether it be by volunteering as a gallery host, tour guide, sponsoring an event, attending a program or becoming a member. There are many ways to lend a hand in ensuring that the legacy of our brave men and women continue to live on and thrive in our space. Please follow our journey by following us on Facebook, Instagram, and LinkedIn, and subscribing to our newsletter. There are exciting projects on the way that you don’t want to miss.
Ready and Forward,
Desmond Bertrand-Pitts, Chief Executive Officer
