AAAM 2026, Philadelphia: This Land Holds Our Stories: Celebrating America 250 and 100 Years of Negro History Week

Museum CEO Desmond Bertrand-Pitts and staff members Kayla Moore and Lanetra Scott attended the Association of African American Museums (AAAM) Conference in Philadelphia this August. As emerging museum professionals, Moore and Scott gained valuable exposure to the field of Black museums, connected with colleagues from across the country, and learned from leaders dedicated to preserving and interpreting African American history and culture.

The Buffalo Soldiers National Museum was also recognized as one of six leading Black cultural institutions highlighted at the conference, an important distinction given the limited number of large Black museum institutions nationwide. Desmond was a panelist in the opening plenary called, The Future of Black Institutions in an era of Public Scrutiny.
