Buffalo Soldier Youth Outdoor Exploration Program

Registration Will Resume Spring 2024

For middle and high school students aged 11 to 17, the Buffalo Soldiers National Museum and Texas Parks and Wildlife Department offer an exceptional outdoor exploration program at no cost.

Participants can enjoy camping, hiking, equestrian training, golfing, and visits to historical sites related to the Buffalo Soldiers’ service and battles in Texas. This program is designed to provide Houston youth with an exhilarating, informative, and challenging outdoor learning experience while instilling in them an appreciation for Texas’ natural and cultural resources.

Registration for summer 2023 is now closed and will resume next spring. Please check back for more information.

August 2023 (Date TBA)
BSNM; Davis Mountain SP, Fort McKavitt and Fort Davis Historical Sites

All activities will be ranger or park-led. Youth will spend a day before the field trip attending a history camp. Students will put the skills they learn to use while camping. (Overnight)

August 2023 (Date TBA)
Lockhart State Park

Ranger-led nature hikes, camping, fishing, and golf. (Overnight)

All programs are available to registrants, or they can choose specific ones. Participants will experience outdoor activities and explore local nature. Additionally, they will develop an understanding of the community and gain leadership skills. All activities are supervised by experienced rangers.
